| dc.description.abstract | Most research on Employee Involvement (EI) has focused on large or 'mainstream' organizations. By adopting those schemes which 'appear' to work well in larger organizations, then smaller firms assume there will be enhanced employee commitment beyond formal contractual requirements. The main question in this paper is whether EI schemes designed by management will suffice under the 2004 Information and Consultation of Employees (ICE) Regulations. It focuses on SMEs which tend to favour informal and direct EI, and it remains unclear how these methods will be played out under the new regulatory environment. Evidence from four case studies is presented here and it suggests that the ICE Regulations impose new challenges for smaller firms given their tendency to provide information rather than consult with employees. It also appears organizational factors, workplace relations history and the way processes are implemented at enterprise level may be far more important than size itself. | en |

Employee wellbeing, control and organizational commitmentThis paper aims to investigate the role of work locus of control (WLOC) as a moderator of the relationship between employee wellbeing and organizational commitment. Design/methodology/approach The paper reports on a quantitative study of middle level executives from motor‐cycle manufacturing organizations based in Northern India. The focus of the paper is to examine the predictive ability of wellbeing and the moderating effect of WLOC in predicting organizational commitment. Findings The results suggest that wellbeing is negatively related to conditional continuance commitment, whereby employees consider the advantages associated with continued participation and costs associated with leaving, and normative commitment, whereby employees feel they have moral obligations to remain with the organization. The presence of an external WLOC has a positive impact on the relationship. Wellbeing, as represented by a hassle‐free existence, predicts positive affective commitment with a particular organization, and internal WLOC as represented by effort influences the relationship negatively. Research limitations/implications Although a cross‐sectional study, its findings have implications for contemporary leadership and organizational psychology research and practice, particularly with regard to understanding of employee commitment in a progressively changing environment. Originality/value Studies examining the role of WLOC as a moderator of the relationship between wellbeing and organizational commitment are limited particularly in the context of post‐liberalization, as is the case with the manufacturing industry in India.

Unveiling Employee Crisis Communication on Social Media: Influences and Insights from Experimental Qualitative ResearchBusinesses are increasingly using social media for crisis communication messages, and so do employees. Given the special relationship with employees, organisations should pay attention to understanding employee communication behaviour (ECB) during an organisational crisis. Drawing from the Situation Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) and the perspective of employees as active participants in crisis communication, this study proposes an evidence-based employee-focused conceptual framework of the anticipated ECBs on social media during an organisational crisis and in response to crisis type and the crisis response strategy utilized by organisations. This research aims to examine the impact of crisis types and crisis response strategies on employee communication behaviour outcomes in social media. The research employs a 2 (crisis type: victim crisis or preventable crisis) * 2 (crisis response strategy: accommodative or defensive) qualitative experimental design. 36 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted in Kuwait with employees working in different industries in the private sector to investigate: 1) ECB on social media in response to defensive and accommodative crisis response strategies in a preventable crisis type, 2) ECB on social media in response to defensive and accommodative crisis response strategies in a victim crisis type, and 3)Employee-organisation relationship (EOR) influence on ECB on social media during an organisational crisis. This research argues that the anticipated ECB is within four classifications 1) Proactive advocacy ECB, 2) Reactive advocacy ECB, 3) neutral ECB, and 4) Adversary ECB. The findings show that employees are more likely to engage in advocacy ECB if the crisis response is informative, regardless of the crisis type. An adversary ECB is expected when the organisation faces a preventable crisis type and utilizes a defensive response strategy. Additionally, a positive EOR encourages a more advocacy ECB.

Corporate citizenship: Employee attitudes and their relationship to an employer brand. A comparative case study in the German FMCG industry.This thesis investigates employee attitudes to corporate citizenship (CC) and the impact on employer brands. It addresses the practice of CC in the German FMCG industry, considers employee understanding of CC, and examines which CC initiatives influence perceptions of employer brands. The research is driven by the dual challenges of sustainable development and the ‘war for talent’ in attracting, motivating and retaining employees. It is underpinned by the extant literature on CC dimensions, stakeholder theory and employer brands. The research approach is based on two case studies, comprising three phases: analysis of corporate documentation followed by two phases of semi-structured interviews exploring employees’ perceptions of CC and the link to employer brands. Key findings: An understanding of the positioning of CC in the corporate sustainability strategy and differing foci of CC, including environment, sustainable supply chain and people/culture. The study highlights employee understanding of eight CC dimensions, revealing economic responsibility toward employees as a new dimension. With respect to employer brands, CC initiatives focused on discretionary responsibility towards the natural environment and economic responsibility towards customers are seen as essential; legal, ethical and discretionary responsibility towards community are limited; and discretionary and economic responsibilities towards employees have a strong relationship. A focus on economic responsibilities towards owners has a strong but negative relationship. The theoretical contribution is a conceptual framework of all identified CC dimensions in practice and their relationship to employer brands. Contributions to practice include the importance of benefit packages, work-life balance support, employee development and work environment.
