Abstract
The international business literature contains considerable research on how culture and institutions influence firm strategy. However, current globalisation trends and the increasing relevance of African Multinational Enterprises (LION MNEs) to socio-economic development call for renewed examination. Specifically, Africa's unique cultural and institutional environments require investigation into how they shape LION MNE operations and expansion strategies. Employing qualitative secondary data from peer reviewed sources and company reports from three purposefully selected LION MNEs, MTN industries, Dangote industries, and Ethiopian Airlines, our findings suggest that cultural and institutional factors and the interactions between them can either serve as enabling or inhibitive factors for LION MNEs in their internationalisation strategies depending on their approach, understanding and willingness to adapt in diverse global contexts. The chapter offers enhanced insight into cultural and institutional theories from an emerging market perspective on the premise that while a regionalisation expansion approach that leverages on synonymous cultural and institutional establishments can be successfully pursued by LION MNEs, their understanding and willingness to adapt in diverse global contexts can also reduce their liability of foreignness in their pursuance of opportunity.
