Abstract
While prior research has drawn attention to the challenge of balancing corporate investments in global value chain (GVC) resilience strategies and environmental sustainability policies due to potential tension that occurs between them, we draw insights from two studies to develop an integrative framework to explain how multinational enterprises (MNEs) may address the tension. While study 1 follows a systematic literature review approach, study 2 draws insights from a case study of Fujitsu, an innovation-focused and sustainability-driven Japanese digital services firm. Findings from study 1 reveal four themes (i.e., capabilities development, effective governance, technological innovation, and risk management) that highlights an apparent lack of theoretical rigor, prescriptive strategies, and a holistic framework to inform MNEs on how to manage tension between GVC resilience and environmental sustainability policies. Results from study 2 show that Fujitsu uses five key strategies (i.e., ecosystem approach, digital technologies and industry 4.0, community engagement, partner diversity and development, and co-creation) to manage the GVC resilience and environmental sustainability tension. By integrating insights from the two studies with the tenets of internalization and GVC theories, we propose an integrative framework for managing GVC resilience-environmental sustainability tension in MNEs, with important theoretical, managerial, and policy implications
