Abstract
Effective and efficient healthcare depends not only on good interpersonal communication but also on the ability of organisations to communicate successfully and professionally. Yet organisations can become entrenched in rules, regulations and expected behaviours that stifle creative responses to work situations. Deep?seated bureaucracy can alienate the personal, and this becomes even more challenging when an organisation operates across multiple sites.
This chapter examines the varied structures of organisations and how communication flow within them can either limit or expand the inclusion of staff members within organisational boundaries. It outlines several barriers to effective organisational communication and suggests ways these hurdles can be overcome. The ethics of healthcare practice are discussed in relation to their effects on both individuals and organisations, highlighting how each can respond to avoid conflict, clashes and threats to professionalism. Above all, the chapter emphasises that open and honest person?centred communication within an organisation can lead to healthy outcomes for both staff and patients.
If youd like, I can also help refine this into a stronger chapter summary or craft a more concise abstract for publication.
